Defense is one of the core player Stats. It indicates how much damage reduction a player or enemy has when taking
Damage.
Effective Health
Effective Health, or EHP, is the exact amount of
Damage a player can take before dying when taking
Health and
Defense into consideration. It is a useful number to check for when comparing armor sets and figuring out which one is better than the other.
Effective Health can be calculated with this formula:
Health
Using this formula, we can figure out how much EHP one would have if they had 1,500
Health and 750
Defense:


This formula can also be used to calculate the exact amount of
Damage you would take from True Damage by replacing
Defense with
True Defense.
Damage Reduction
Damage Reduction is a percent value which represents how much
Damage a player or enemy will not take when taking
Damage.
The formula for Damage reduction can be seen as follows:

For example, if a player has 500
Defense, the formula will be 500 / 600, resulting in a 83.3%
Damage reduction.

|
You can add up to 10 Hot Potato Books to any given armor piece, meaning with 4 armor pieces, you can gain up to an additional 80 Defense.

Fuming Potato Book
|
+2 Defense per book
|
You can add up to 5 Fuming Potato Books to any given armor piece, meaning with 4 armor pieces, you can gain up to an additional 40 Defense this way.

Beacon 5
|
+40 Defense (while on Private Island)
|
If enabled, a Beacon 5 can grant +40 Defense, but only while on your Private Island. No other Beacon tier can grant Defense.
